Here, trekkers experience a remote and rugged mountain environment, surrounded by glaciers, moraines, and towering peaks. The journey then proceeds to Bhairab Kunda, another sacred lake further northeast. The lake is nestled in a peaceful setting, surrounded by beautiful forests and steep cliffs, creating a serene and mystical atmosphere.
The return route traverses hidden trails used by cattle herders and passes through remote farm settlements, eventually concluding at the roadhead for an overland drive back to Kathmandu. The trek is a perfect blend of natural beauty, spiritual exploration, and cultural discovery. Itinerary
Upon arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, complete your visa procedures and collect your luggage. As you exit the terminal, a representative from Best Heritage Tour will greet you.
You will then take a short drive to your hotel, conveniently located near the main city. After settling into your room, you can rest before attending a trek briefing conducted by the group leader or guide. The briefing will cover essential information about the trek, including camping, meals, routes, local culture, and religious sites. It will also provide insights into the views and experiences awaiting you to ensure a pleasant and memorable adventure.
Spend a relaxing day in Kathmandu exploring the city's renowned landmarks. Accompanied by an experienced cultural guide, you will visit sites of significant historical and religious importance for both Hinduism and Buddhism.
The tour includes World Heritage Sites such as the ancient Durbar Square, the 2,500-year-old Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, and the grand Bouddhanath Stupa, a key Buddhist site.
After the tour, return to your hotel to finalize preparations and pack for the Panch Pokhari Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek. Items or clothing not needed for the trek can be securely stored at the hotel or with the Best Heritage Tour office. Valuables can be kept in the hotel's safe deposit box.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, depart from the hotel for a scenic and engaging journey east of the Kathmandu Valley. The initial stretch of the drive follows a pleasant highway, leading to the historic town of Dhulikhel. From here, you can admire panoramic views of the Central and Eastern Himalayan ranges, including the Jugal and Langtang Himalayas.
The drive then descends to warmer regions, passing through charming villages and towns, including Panchkhal. At this point, the route diverges from the main highway and heads north towards Melamchi Bazaar, a bustling and expansive town where you may stop for lunch if time allows.
Continuing on a winding and rugged dirt road, the journey leads to Thulo Bhotang, a picturesque village inhabited by a diverse mix of Tamang, Sherpa, Magar, Newar, Chhetri, and Brahmin communities. This area sees very few foreign visitors, offering a unique cultural experience.
Your first overnight stop will be at a tented campsite on a farmyard, with time to explore the village and observe the local way of life. From here, the route ventures into remote highland areas.
The first day of the trek begins after breakfast, prepared by our camping cook, and packing up the campsite. The journey starts with an uphill climb to Tupi Danda, following a scenic forest trail. The path is surrounded by tall rhododendron, pine, and fir trees. As the ascent continues, you will pass a few kharkas (temporary summer shelters for cattle herders). Moving at a steady pace to adapt to the altitude, the trek concludes at a serene grassy meadow in Nosyampati, where the campsite is set amidst picturesque woodlands.
Spend a relaxing day at Nosyampati to acclimatize before heading to the higher regions near Panch Pokhari and Jugal Himal base camp. This location, situated at an ideal altitude, offers a perfect opportunity for rest and a short hike to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and snow-capped mountains. Nosyampati serves as a summer pasture for local villagers' cattle, providing a tranquil environment where you can immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of nature, accompanied only by the sounds of birds and the wilderness.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, today's trek is relatively shorter than the previous day. However, the steep ascent makes it quite challenging. The trek begins with a steady uphill climb of over 400 meters, with some sections being particularly steep. Despite the effort, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Jugal Himal mountain range.
The trail ascends further through dense forests before a short descent brings you to Panch Pokhari, a serene location with five shimmering ponds. Nestled in a picturesque valley beneath towering Himalayan peaks such as Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), Jugal Himal (6,535 m), and Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), the area offers stunning contrasts of lush green hills and majestic snow-capped mountains.
Panch Pokhari, meaning "five ponds," is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus. During the full moon in July or August, a religious fair is held here. Thousands of Hindus and Buddhists visit to pray, worship, and bathe in the holy waters, believed to cleanse sins and negative karma.
This site also serves as a junction for treks toward Jugal Himal Base Camp and the famous Langtang Valley via Tillman’s Col, a route pioneered in the early 1950s.
After leaving the Panch Pokhari camp, the trail heads directly north toward the Jugal Himal Base Camp. The trek involves several hours of steep climbing, reaching a crest and ridge top at an elevation of over 4,400 meters. From this high point, trekkers can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding landscape, including Panch Pokhari below and the Jugal Himal mountain range to the north. The path then gradually descends to the base of an unnamed high ridge, leading to the small settlement of Nema-Gchukpa Kharka. This location is an ideal spot for an overnight camp, offering stunning views of snow-covered peaks.
The journey from Nema-Gchukpa Kharka continues towards Chhendang, situated at a lower altitude compared to the previous campsite. After breakfast, the trek begins with a gradual ascent to a high ridge. Upon reaching Chidakpu Kharka at 4,513 m, following a steep climb, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Langtang and Jugal Himal ranges.
The trail then descends steeply towards Chhendang, where the campsite is located for the night. During the descent, you may need to cross a swift, cold stream. If a temporary log bridge is unavailable, you might rely on small bridges sometimes built by cattle herders during grazing seasons for their livestock.
Today’s trek involves a relatively long walk, requiring trekkers to exercise caution on certain narrow sections. One of these sections is along the edge of a steep rocky cliff, which poses a potential risk of rockfall. The trail gradually ascends as you continue, eventually reaching a small grassy area at Tongsyup Gufa, a spot with an overhanging cave. In ancient times, monks and Buddhist priests used this cave as a peaceful refuge for meditation. From this point, the trail descends slowly, crossing a stream before reaching our overnight camp at Ne Pemasal.
The day begins with a moderate trek, as the trail gradually ascends, adding more elevation to the journey. After leaving the fast-flowing stream behind, we begin an uphill climb towards the small settlement of Bumbaserpu, located at over 4,200m. From there, we continue with an additional hour or more of climbing to reach the camp at Gyap Kharka. The day's walk offers an exciting variety, with brief ascents and descents along a narrow trail.
We begin the trek from Gyap Kharka, a summer grazing area for cattle. From here, we take a short walk to the Jugal Himal Base Camp, the main destination of the adventure. The path may be challenging with rocky moraines and glaciers, so it's important to proceed with caution. We will reach the base camp in time for lunch and spend the night at the foot of the towering Jugal Himal peaks. The afternoon is free for rest and to enjoy the breathtaking mountain views, with an optional short hike around the area.
Today marks the completion of the first phase of the adventure, leaving you with a sense of accomplishment and excitement. The return journey takes you further east into the Sindupalanchok district, offering various routes to reach Bhairab Kunda. The trek follows a different path back to Ne Pemasal, traveling along the eastern route beside the Ne Pemasal River. This route is on the opposite side of the one we took yesterday, which led to Jugal Base Camp via Gyap Kharka. The day concludes with a final overnight camp near the main areas of Jugal Himal.
Today, we depart from our camp at Ne Pemasal and head east towards Ne-Kharka for an overnight stay. The trail diverges from the Panch Pokhari area and gradually ascends and descends through rugged terrain. Some sections of the path feature glaciated moraines of rocks and ice. This is a long, unique trek on a route rarely used by others, likely only frequented by a few trekkers or explorers. It offers an intriguing experience away from the more popular trails, following a hidden path to reach the camp at Ne-Kharka. This area is mainly visited by local cattle herders during the summer months.
Today, we depart from the Ne-Kharka camp and head towards the secluded Jumle Pokhari, a small glacial pond. The trek begins with a brief downhill walk to Takpadding, then continues to Phu Kharka, located east of the main Somdong route. Our path then leads through a newly explored trail, passing smaller glacial ponds in the Jumle Pokhari area. This location is close to Loom Pokhari and Bhairab Kunda, which will be our next destinations after our stay at Jumle Pokhari. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the remote and isolated region of Jugal Himal as we approach the pond. We will camp near the small pond of Jumle Pokhari for the night.
After spending a pleasant night at Jumle Pokhari, a place known for its twin ponds, we begin our trek on a quiet trail leading to Kappu Danda, a high hill with ridges. Our route to Bhairab Kunda is unique, approaching from the northwest, unlike the more common southern path. We reach Bhairab Kunda, a stunning holy lake located at 4,125 meters. This site is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus.
Similar to Panch Pokhari, Bhairab Kunda hosts religious ceremonies annually in July or August, according to the Hindu Lunar calendar. Pilgrims visit to honor the temple dedicated to Lord Bhairab, a destructive aspect of Lord Shiva, and to bathe in the sacred waters of the lake. From the campsite, enjoy breathtaking views of the Jugal Himal peaks.
Starting from Bhairab Kunda, known for its beautiful scenery, the trail descends with some short ascents and more downhill stretches. The path enters a dense forest of rhododendron, pine, oak, and fir trees. Continuing on, you will reach Nautalle Kharka, which refers to a temporary shelter for cattle herders, built in nine stories. It was likely constructed as a watchtower to protect cattle from wild animals.
The trek then continues downward to Thulo Dhunga, a small farming settlement near a large boulder. The name "Thulo Dhunga" refers to the prominent boulder close to the farm, where our campsite is set for the night.
On the final day of our journey, we will embark on a short trek to Kyangsing village, marking the conclusion of our adventurous walk. The trek begins by following the southern route, gradually leading us into the warmer farming areas of Kyangsing village. This area is predominantly inhabited by the Tamang mountain tribes, with some Sherpa communities, all practicing Buddhism. Kyangsing is a charming farming village.
From here, we will take a four-wheel drive for a scenic overland journey lasting over six hours to Kathmandu. While the drive is long, it offers an exciting and memorable experience as we travel along rough dirt tracks. After several hours of navigating the bumpy hill roads, we will join the main road leading to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel in time for your final dinner in Kathmandu and Nepal, marking the end of the remarkable Ultimate Jugal Himal Adventure.
Today is a free day in Kathmandu for personal activities or shopping. Trekkers with early flights to their respective countries or other destinations can check out from the hotel and depart for their international flight home.

Best Seasons
The ideal seasons for the Panch Pokhari Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek are spring and autumn. Spring lasts from March to May, offering mostly sunny days, although afternoons may be cloudy. Rain is possible in lower regions and mid-hills, while snowfall can occur at higher elevations. Despite this, most days are suitable for trekking with clear and breathtaking views.
During spring, wildflowers, particularly rhododendrons and magnolias, bloom in abundance. The meadows are covered with small, colorful flowers, making it a perfect time to trek around Panch Pokhari, Jugal Himal Base Camp, Bhairab Kunda, and other areas of the Himalayas. The mornings above 1,800 m (6,000 ft) can be cold, as well as the shaded areas and evenings.
Autumn, from September to December, is another favorable season for the trek. Most days are clear and sunny, with cold mornings, shaded areas, and chilly evenings. The views are often spectacular, and there may be occasional snowfall above 2,500 m (8,200 ft). This season provides pleasant trekking conditions and stunning views of the snow-capped mountains.
Food & Water
It is advisable not to drink untreated tap water. During trekking or cycling tours, water will be provided for refilling your personal bottles. This water will be boiled, filtered, or supplied in large jerry cans or 5-liter bottles. We recommend carrying purification tablets or a filter bottle for treating water in towns or when water is not available. We also discourage purchasing single-use plastic bottles.
On our camping trips in Nepal, an experienced trek cook and their team will accompany you. Breakfast typically consists of porridge or cereals, sometimes with eggs, along with tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Lunch is usually prepared on the trail and may include cooked or canned vegetables, rice, chips, freshly made Tibetan bread, and canned tuna, meats, or cheese. Noodle soup may occasionally be added. Dinner starts with soup, followed by a locally inspired main course such as rice, dal, and spicy vegetables, or an international dish like pasta with tomato sauce or pizza and chips. Dessert can be tinned fruit with custard, rice pudding, or cake with custard. The meals are designed to be high in carbohydrates and primarily vegetarian, as this diet is easy to digest at high altitudes.
During the trek, there will be limited opportunities to purchase snacks or drinks from local shops and tea houses. All meals during the trek, as well as those at your hotel in Kathmandu, are included in the trip price.
Accommodation
During your stay, we will spend 3 nights in Kathmandu at a comfortable 3-star hotel, located in the city center. The hotel offers excellent facilities, including fast and free WiFi, a spa, and a fitness center. One night will be spent at a lodge in Thulo Bhotang, followed by 14 nights of full-service camping. This camping experience includes spacious 2-person tents with foam mattresses, a dining tent with tables and chairs for meals and relaxation, a kitchen tent for the cooking crew, and one or two toilet tents. Your local crew will set up the camp each evening and dismantle it in the morning. Each day, you will be served a cup of bed tea in the morning, along with a bowl of water for washing, and water for handwashing will be provided at every meal. Upon arrival at camp, hot drinks and snacks will be available in the dining tent.
Accommodation will be arranged on a twin-sharing basis. If you are traveling alone, you will be paired with another single traveler of the same gender. It is possible to rent a single tent for the trek at an additional cost. Please note that single tent hire does not include single room occupancy in hotels. For the 3 nights in Kathmandu, single room accommodations can be arranged for an extra charge. Additional hotel nights in Kathmandu can also be pre-booked.
Trip Difficulty: Fitness, Medical, and Health
The Panch Pokhari Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek is considered moderate to challenging and requires a good level of physical fitness. You will hike for 5-7 hours each day, with frequent breaks to take in the beautiful mountain views. The trail involves a combination of long ascents, steep descents, and easier sections, including rocky paths and forested areas. The trek requires stamina, and having previous hiking experience will be helpful, but is not mandatory. Being in better physical condition will enhance your experience.
Although the trek is not suitable for those with serious health conditions, such as heart or lung issues, it is manageable for most healthy individuals. It is advisable to engage in activities like swimming, cycling, or jogging for several weeks before the trek to improve your endurance.
A Typical Trekking Day
A typical trekking day on the Panch Pokhari Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek begins with an early morning start. Trekkers are greeted with a hot breakfast, prepared by the trek's cook, before setting out on the trail. The first few hours are often spent walking at a steady pace to acclimatize and adjust to the altitude, with the terrain gradually becoming steeper as the day progresses. The trail is marked by picturesque landscapes, including lush forests, alpine meadows, and glimpses of the towering mountain peaks in the distance.
As the day continues, trekkers may take breaks at scenic spots to rest and hydrate, with a packed lunch provided along the way, typically around midday. After lunch, the trek resumes, and trekkers may encounter more challenging sections of the route, which might include rocky paths or steep ascents. The pace will depend on the terrain, with the group leader ensuring that the group moves together, taking time for necessary rests to avoid overexertion.
The trekking day concludes in the late afternoon, with the team arriving at the designated campsite. After setting up tents and settling in, trekkers have time to relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings. Dinner is served, offering a variety of freshly prepared meals. The evening is typically spent socializing, discussing the day's experiences, or simply enjoying the tranquil wilderness.
Finally, trekkers retire to their tents for the night, with an early bedtime to prepare for the following day's adventure. The guide ensures that all necessary arrangements are made for the trek’s logistics, including the safety and well-being of the participants.

We can accommodate groups of any size, and for groups of 12 or more, we provide an assistant guide for added support.
Personal Extra Expenses
This package covers the main trek expenses, but there are additional personal costs not included. These include hotel stays in Kathmandu, food, visa application fees, travel insurance, drinks (hot beverages like tea/coffee, cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages), tips for the crew, snacks, and souvenirs. We recommend bringing cash in major currencies and exchanging it for Nepali Rupees at authorized exchange offices in Kathmandu, as foreign currency is not accepted in the trekking area. On average, you should budget between $10 and $20 per day for personal expenses during the trek.
Insurance Policy
The Panch Pokhari Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek is a challenging adventure that takes you through high-altitude terrain, where the risk of altitude sickness and other health concerns is present. There are no modern medical facilities available in the trekking area, so it is crucial to have proper travel insurance.
Your insurance should cover:
- Helicopter rescue and medical costs up to the maximum trekking altitude of 5,000 meters.
While we do not sell insurance policies, we recommend choosing an insurance company based on our past customers' experiences. In case of an emergency, we will use your insurance certificate and related documents to arrange swift and effective rescue services, ensuring your safe transportation to the nearest medical facility.
Important Notice: Before purchasing your travel insurance, please contact your insurance company to confirm that the policy covers medical expenses and helicopter rescue up to 5,000 meters. Do not rely solely on the information provided on the company’s website.
Passport and Visa
All foreign nationals, except Indian citizens, need a valid visa to enter Nepal. Most countries can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or at immigration points along the Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet borders.
To apply for a visa, ensure you have:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months
- A passport-sized photo
- The visa fee (currently $50 for a 30-day stay)
Children under 10 years old receive a free visa. However, citizens from Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan are not eligible for a visa on arrival and must apply at a Nepalese embassy.
Note: Visa requirements may change, so it's best to check the latest information at Nepal Immigration.
Money Exchange
1 USD = ~130 NPR (Nepalese Rupee)
Most foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks and legal exchange offices throughout Thamel and Kathmandu. Some hotels may also exchange small amounts of cash. Legal tender exchanges display the current exchange rate for the public to check. If you have Indian rupees, note that only ₹100 and ₹2,000 Indian rupee notes are legal in Nepal.
Traveler's cheques offer security but involve lengthy procedures and high fees. We recommend exchanging cash instead. You can withdraw cash in Nepalese rupees from ATMs in Kathmandu, most of which operate 24/7. The withdrawal limit is 35,000 NPR, with a fee of 500 NPR per transaction.
If exchanging money at a bank, expect a fee of 4% or higher.
There are no foreign currency exchange facilities in the trekking area, and only Nepalese currency is accepted. Be sure to exchange money while in Kathmandu. Additional expenses during the trek may range from $10–$20 per day.
Please note that most banks in Nepal only accept new, clean foreign currency. Avoid bringing old, torn, or faded notes.
Luggage
Each porter will carry luggage for two trekkers, with a combined weight limit of 16kg (8kg per trekker). Please pack only the essentials. In addition, trekkers should bring a small backpack for important documents and valuables. Best Heritage Tour provides free storage for excess baggage at our facility for the duration of your trek.
