Everest Base Camp weather Temperatures Day And Night

Everest Base Camp Weather: What to Expect Day and Night

The Everest Base Camp Trek takes you from the lush valleys of Lukla (2,800 m) to the icy heights of Base Camp (5,364 m). Because of the altitude gain, temperatures change dramatically between daytime and nighttime, and being prepared is essential for a safe and comfortable journey.

EBC Daytime Temperatures

At lower elevations (Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar), daytime temperatures are generally mild:

  • Spring (March–May): 10°C to 18°C

  • Autumn (September–November): 8°C to 16°C

As you trek higher toward Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, temperatures drop significantly:

  • Above 4,000 m: 2°C to 10°C during the day

  • Near Base Camp (5,000+ m): 0°C to 5°C on sunny days

Even though the sun can feel warm at midday, the wind chill is strong at higher altitudes, so layering is key.

EBC Nighttime Temperatures

When the sun sets, the Himalayas reveal their true cold:

  • Below 4,000 m: 0°C to -5°C

  • Above 4,500 m: -5°C to -10°C

  • At Base Camp or Kalapathar: -10°C to -20°C (especially in early morning or late night)

The temperature inside teahouses is usually warmer but still chilly — expect thin walls and limited heating. A warm sleeping bag (rated to -15°C) is a must.

Best Seasons for Comfortable Weather

  • Spring (March–May): Clear skies, moderate cold, blooming rhododendrons.

  • Autumn (September–November): Stable weather, crisp air, perfect visibility.

Both seasons offer the most comfortable temperatures for trekking, though nights are still cold above 4,000 meters.

Tips for Handling the Cold

  • Dress in layers — base, fleece, and outer shell.

  • Use down jackets and thermal leggings at higher altitudes.

  • Always carry warm gloves, hats, and buffs for evenings.

  • Stay hydrated and eat enough calories to keep your body warm.
