Annapurna Circuit vs Manaslu Circuit: Which is Better?

The Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu Circuit are two iconic and rewarding routes in Nepal. Deciding which hike to choose can be difficult, as each offers unique experiences, challenges, and breathtaking scenery. In this article, we delve into the details of both hikes, considering their history, popularity, routes, cultural richness, and other important aspects to help you decide which one is better for your adventure.

Introduction

Annapurna Circuit: The Annapurna Circuit is one of the most famous trekking routes in central Nepal. It circles the Annapurna massif and has a total length of about 160-230 kilometers. The trek passes through a variety of landscapes, ranging from subtropical forests to alpine meadows to semi-arid deserts, and the corresponding vegetation and terrain, including the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The Annapurna Circuit trek takes its name from Mount Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world.

The Annapurna Circuit was opened to foreign trekkers in 1977 after the resolution of the conflict between the CIA-backed Khampa guerrillas operating in Tibet, local residents, and the Nepalese army. Originally, the Annapurna Circuit started from Dumre and ended in Pokhara. The Annapurna Circuit quickly gained popularity due to its varied landscapes, rich culture, and the thrill of crossing Thorong La Pass, which at 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) is one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Over the decades, the Annapurna Circuit has become one of the most traveled routes in Nepal, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

Manaslu Circuit: Located in the Gorkha district of Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit is a relatively new and less crowded alternative to the Annapurna Circuit. This hike circles Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet). Manaslu was first summited in 1956 by members of a Japanese expedition, Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu.

The route is about 177 kilometers long and offers hikers an unparalleled experience of remote mountainous terrain, diverse ecosystems, and a rich culture with Tibetan influences.

Before 1990, the Manaslu region was largely unexplored and known only to a few local residents and climbers. In 1991, the Nepalese government recognized its tourism potential and opened it to tourism with some restrictions. The Manaslu Conservation Area was established in 1998 to protect the environment and promote sustainable tourism. It is still part of the Exclusion Zone and requires special permission and a qualified guide. The Manaslu Circuit's relative isolation and untouched natural beauty have made it increasingly popular among hikers looking for a more authentic, less commercialized experience. The Manaslu Circuit passes through the Exclusion Zone, but you can move freely with the necessary permits.

Route

Annapurna Circuit Route: The Annapurna Circuit starts in the lowlands of Bulbulle and climbs gently through lush forests and terraced fields. During the climb, you will pass through charming villages such as Chame, Pisang and Manang, each with its own culture and traditions. The main attraction of the hike is crossing the Thorong La pass, which is 5,416 meters high, before going down into the Kali Gandaki Valley and visiting the holy site of Muktinath, a significant religious monument common to Hindus and Buddhists. You can end the trek in Jomsom (from where you can fly to Pokhara) or continue the journey to Tatopani and on to Ghorepani and Poon Hill.

Manaslu Circuit: The Manaslu Circuit starts from Soti Khola and follows the Buddhi Gandaki River as it winds its way through dense forests, terraced fields and traditional Gurung villages. As the trail climbs, the landscape changes dramatically, with lush greenery giving way to the dry, rocky terrain characteristic of the Tibetan Plateau. Important villages along the route are Namrung, Samagaung, Samdo and Dharamsala (the staging town before crossing the Lake La pass) where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and visit ancient monasteries. The most challenging part of the trek is crossing the Lalkya La pass at an altitude of 5,160 meters (16,929 feet), which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Nepalese and Tibetan mountain ranges. The trek ends in Dharapani, where it connects to the Annapurna Circuit.

Trek Length and Duration

Annapurna Circuit: Depending on the route chosen, the Annapurna Circuit usually takes 12 to 20 days. Length and duration may vary depending on starting and ending points, detours and acclimatization days.  Manaslu Circuit: The Manaslu Circuit is slightly shorter. However, the duration will vary depending on your acclimatization needs and whether you plan to make detours such as: B. Visit to Manaslu Base Camp (varies).

Cultural and Traditional Experiences

Annapurna Circuit: The cultural diversity along the Annapurna Circuit is one of its main attractions. Hikers pass through villages inhabited by Gurung, Thakali and Magar tribes, each with their own customs, festivals and architectural styles. The presence of Hindu and Buddhist religious sites, including the revered temple of Muktinath, further adds to the cultural richness of the trek.

Manaslu Circuit: The Manaslu Circuit offers a deeper experience into Tibetan Buddhist culture. The Manaslu Conservation Area (MCA) is home to two major ethnic groups, the Nubri and the Tsum, separated by the River Tikul. Many of the Gurungs from this region served in the British Army. The area is dotted with Buddhist landmarks, including famous monasteries such as Shringi, Mu and Chekampal. Local lamas strictly prohibit violence towards wild animals. Weather Considerations

Annapurna Circuit: The ideal times to trek

The Annapurna Circuit are in the pre-monsoon season (March to May) and the post-monsoon season (September to November). The weather during this time is generally stable, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. However, it can be hot and humid in the lower areas of the hike and snow is possible on the higher passes.

Manaslu Circuit: As with the Annapurna Circuit, the best time to trek the Manaslu Circuit is during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The weather during this time is stable, but due to the high altitude of the trek, it can be cold, especially while crossing the Lalkiya La pass. Additionally, due to the area's remote location, weather conditions can change quickly, so hikers should be prepared.
