Types of Safaris in Bardiya
Jungle Safari:
Bardiya National Park is home to some of the most endangered flora and fauna globally, making it the perfect place for a jungle safari. Jungle safaris may be conducted as brief excursions during the early morning or in the evening hours. The main objective of the jungle safari is a sightseeing tour, especially with regard to the Bengal tiger. This species of tiger is very rare globally with an estimated 2,500 remaining.
The national park provides chances to see wildlife, including wild rhinos, elephants, and various other animals. One of Nepal's most diverse parks, Bardia National Park has a lot to offer tourists and locals who want to explore and experience nature on a guided walk through the forest.
A leisurely 3-5 hour walk starts early in the morning when the wildlife is most active but can take twice as long for those who want more time to explore. Unlike zoo visitors, spotting animals depends on the season, weather and a bit of luck.
However, an experienced guide increases the chances of frequent animal encounters. But we don't always walk. Much of our time in nature is spent sitting and observing waterholes, riverbanks, and shelters.
Jeep Safari:
You may have seen videos of people riding jeeps to explore wildlife. We do the same during the Bardiya Jungle Safari. The wild animals in the jungle are early risers, so we wake up early to increase our chances of spotting them. Before a light breakfast, we drive our jeep deep into the jungle for a few hours. Our guide will accompany us to areas where we are most likely to spot a tiger. While there’s no certainty a foal will be born, there’s a 90% chance of spotting a tiger in Bardia.
Pay attention to the jungle sounds, and you may catch the monkeys calling out, warning you about the "King of the Forest". This sound lets you know that he is about to depart. Tigers are solitary and territorial hunters. They hunt at night, so they are hard to notice during the day. So, if you do see one, it could be the most amazing experience of your life.
You can also get up close and personal with wild elephants, Indian rhinos, rare birds, and more.
Elephant Safari:
Elephant Safari offers a unique opportunity to experience nature up close like no other experience. Elephants have a stealthy nature that allows you to get within a meter of other animals without being spotted. Elephants take you to parts of the park that are inaccessible on foot and allow you to get up close and personal with huge animals like rhinos without disturbing them. The more time you spend with the elephants, the bigger they get and the better your chances of seeing wildlife. A 2-3 hour ride will give you an up-close look at wildlife.
Always at the forefront during the safari, you will be accompanied by riders, well-trained guides, and naturalists to ensure your safety and provide you with an unforgettable experience. Riding on elephant backs allows you to get very close to the wildlife, but it is important to remain quiet. Noise can scare off tigers, rhinos, deer, and other animals.

Additional Activities to Do
Rafting on the Karnali River
The Karnali River is the longest and largest river in Nepal, flowing through the remote and pristine landscapes of the Far West. Rafting participants will be exposed to unparalleled beauty and challenging rapids. This river cruise through lush forests, deep canyons and traditional villages allows you to explore Nepal's rich natural and cultural heritage. Rafting participants will experience a combination of various rapids from class III to V and gentle sections and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.
Our rafting guides will help you identify as many species of birds and other animals as possible on the river banks during your day trip. It is well known that elephants, deer, wild boars, and rhinos frequently come to the riverbank to drink, and the chance to see endangered freshwater dolphins is a very popular experience.
Visit the Elephant & Crocodile Breeding Center
For crocodile lovers and those who want to study crocodiles, a visit to the breeding center is a must. The center can be accessed both inside and outside the park grounds. Don’t forget to check on the entrance fee. If you love the rare and unique gharial crocodile, there is a special area within the zoo where gharial crocodiles are kept. However, this section requires an entry ticket, which is also quite expensive.
Bardia National Park also has a small elephant breeding center in the south of the park. This center is the equivalent of Chitwan National Park. Elephants of different ages can be seen there. Certain elephants are used for anti-poaching patrols, others for injury recovery and breeding. The Elephant Breeding Centre is open all day, but there are set visiting times to ensure the best experience.
Visit the Tharu Cultural Museum
The Tharu Cultural Museum is located right by the main entrance of Bardia National Park. This museum showcases the culture, traditions, history, language and dress of the Tharu people. You will also see farming and cooking implements. There is a small entrance fee, but you do not need a Bardia National Park ticket to visit the museum.
Boating and River Fishing
Many people enjoy boating on the rivers around Bardia, which gives you a completely different perspective of the forest than walking. The animals barely notice the boat and you can observe their natural behaviour. However, boating is expensive and there is also a chance of encountering a crocodile in the water.
River fishing is one of the main recreational activities in Bardia, where fishermen can catch gold mahseer and goonch. It is important to get permission before fishing and to release all fish back into the river. Fishing equipment can be rented for $10 a day.
Cultural tours to nearby temples
Temples and shrines of various sizes characterize Thakurdwara. A Shiva temple at Bardia existed for a short time but is not as ancient, dating back to the earliest period in the region. You can visit the sub-shrines and the main shrine without any cost. Of particular note is that Nepal's largest Shiva temple has developed its own unique design style. The Digital Archaeology Foundation used 3D digital preservation techniques to preserve the venue in its unique nature.
